Mauritius is a tropical island in the Indian Ocean, far off the eastern coast of Africa.

Beyond pristine sand beaches and colonial villa, this island is home to one of the most impressive underwater waterfall in the world.

It is really just an optical illusion (as explained in detail in this article), and it can be seen during the day (so avoid sunrise and sunset) only by the air, and it located off La Morne beach, in the south-west point of the island.

You can only see it from the air, so you can either book a flight (I’ve used Lagoon flights, the only one I know in the area), an helicopter tour or using a drone, like you can see from the video I shot here:

Uganda is famous for its population of mountain gorillas in Bwindi Impenetrable Forest (see the travel story here)

There are however several opportunities to see great wildlife in the country, so you can keep yourself busy for at least 7-8 days of trip in Uganda (if you consider 2-3 days for Gorilla tracking)

Kibale Forest National Park

Without leaving the primates family, an exceptional experience is seeing che chimpanzees, that are actually our closest cousins.

The main chimp tracking in the country is done in the Kibale Forest National Park, that is also where I strongly recommend you to book. Main reasons are the easiness of trekking, concentration of families and closeness to them. There are other tracking in Uganda (such as in Queen Elizabeth National Park), but nowhere else you will get such an high probability to see chimpanzees like in Kibale Forest.

You could either choose to do a chimpanzee tracking experience (the shorter one, around one hour with them) or a chimpanzee habituation, where you can spend around half a day with them. Obviously I recommend you the latter.

Keep in mind that chimpanzee families in the habituation experience (as the word suggest) has to be habituated yes to human presence, so it might be harder to see them up close, like it happened with my group.

But no worries since the guides are there to make the best experience for you: after spending few hours watching a chimp family really up in the trees, we moved to a more habituated one (where other groups doing the tracking were staying), and we got to see them really, really close.

I don’t usually recommend specific accommodations, but I have to make an exception for Isunga Lodge, a beautiful lodge placed on a hill, overlooking a mesmerizing valley. But more than the beauty of the place, the cleanliness, the good food is the outstanding service provided by the owners and the staff. By the way, I shot this photos from the lounge:

The second best spot for wildlife is the Queen Elizabeth National Park, the main and biggest national park in Uganda, that can be divided in two different parts: Ishasha sector and Kazinga Channel.

Queen Elizabeth NP: Ishasha Sector

There is one and very good reason to come to the far-west side of Queen Elizabeth National Park: the tree climbing lions.

This population of lions has the habit to climb up fig trees to escape the extreme heat on the ground, especially during midday hours (from 11am to 3pm).

They are not the only ones in the world, but surely the most famous ones!

You have to remember anyway that the number of lions is actually very low and sometimes the cross the border to Congo, so you have to be lucky.

If they are within the park, is very easy to spot them, just look for fig trees, within the branches.

You can spend 1-2 days here looking and shooting lions, but beware that the concentration of wildlife in the area is actually pretty low: we just saw some impalas, buffalos and hear hippos near the river. So don’t spend more than 1-2 days around here.

Queen Elizabeth NP Kazinga Channel

Kazinga channel is a 40 km stream of water that connects Lake Georgia and Lake Victoria, and home to an amazing concentration of safari wildlife, that is why is the top 1 spot for wildlife spotting and photography.

My recommendation is to do 1 or 2 boat tours, 1 during midday (where the thirsty animals come to drink water) and 1 in the sunset-early morning, to get a better light for photography.

There are the official national park safari boat, that departure near the mweya safari lodge (the most expensive lodge in the area), and the community boat tours, organized by local villagers. These are a good addition to the experience, plus you will help the local communities (you can book them through here).

Queen Elizabeth National Park game drives

Around the Kazinga Channel, there are many tracks for game drives. As wildlife, you can expect to see herbivores (like gazelles and antelopes), elephants (some big herds here), lions (more difficult), leopard (we spotted one, very rare), hyenas, hippos, buffalos.

There are no giraffes and no cheetah.

There is also the possibility to do night game drives, where a ranger comes with you on your vehicle (if you have one, otherwise you can rent it) equipped with a huge torch. It was among the highlight of the experience, especially when we follow a pack of lions beginning the hunt. Don’t miss this experience.

Gorilla tracking is a once in a lifetime experience to meet the endangered species of Mountain Gorillas, endemic of Central Africa.

Made famous by american zoologist Diane Fossey (please do yourself a favour and at least watch the movie with Sigourney Weaver), these primates will be once of the best wildlife encounters of your life.

Here some quick FAQ after I visited Uganda, with some of my photos.

What is gorilla tracking?

Gorilla tracking is a day activity for tracking wild mountain gorillas and, once you find them, spend some time with them for usually one hour of time

Where can you do gorilla tracking in Africa?

Mountain gorillas can be found in Uganda, Rwanda and Congo, nowhere else in the world.

Why chose Uganda and Bwindi Impenetrable Forest?

Bwindi Impenetrable Forest has roughly half the world population of mountain gorillas (around 1,000 gorillas), so it is the place with the best chances to see the mountain gorillas.

How much cost a permit for Gorilla Tracking in Bwindi?

1 day permit in Uganda costs 700 usd (in 2020), while in Rwanda the same costs 1500 usd. Congo is cheaper (around 450 usd), but not safe for tourists.

All costs are for the peak season.

Where do I get the permit?

Ask a local travel agency, or better your hotel. Is the safest bet.

How much time before should I get the permit?

If you plan to visit on peak season, book the permit 10 months before to be safe. So February for visiting on New Years’ Eve

When is the peak season?

Peak season is in european winter time, so january-april, that is the dry season.

Are there any downside in choosing Bwindi?

Bwindi is literally an IMPENETRABLE FOREST, meaning that the forest is thick and lush, and on steep mountains.

So you could see the gorillas through the bushes, and not in an open environment, meaning that could be not ideal for photography, but largely depends on your luck.

Should I choose 1 day or 2 day tracking?

If you can afford it, do two separate day tracking: these increase your chances to see the gorillas in different settings and do more photography.

How long is gorilla tracking?

You will gather with all the visitors around 7.30 am, do a general briefing and leave with your 8-people group around 9.00 am.

The hiking for finding the gorilla could be from 1 hour to 4 hours: once you find them, you will stay with them 1 hour and then go back.

Usually how much long is the hiking?

Expect an average of two hours, at least.

You can be VERY LUCKY and find the after one hour (a group did), or not so lucky and walk for 3-4 hours.

Let’s be honest: how tough is the hiking?

Let’s start assessing your physical condition.

If you do regularly sport, running or generally physical activity it is an hard hiking.

Not only for the steep ground, but for the VERY THICK jungle and other perils (like red ants crawling your legs).

If you, like me, are a healthy guy, like to walk around cities and stuff, but not used to regular and intense activity IT IS A VERY, VERY HARD HIKING.

If I did it, mostly everybody can do it, but it has been very challenging, and honestly I couldn’t do it for consequent days.

Should I get a porter?

Please do yourself and the community a favor and hire a porter (for 20-25 usd): it will carry your bag and help you along the path.

You will get also a walking stick, EXTREMELY USEFUL

How far will be the gorillas from me?

Expect to be from very close like 3 meters to 15 – 20 meters.

Remember the VERY THICK VEGETATION, the far they are, the almost impossible will be to do photos

Which focal length and lenses should I carry for gorilla tracking?

For a photographer, I believe this is the most important question, that I have tried to explore before going in Uganda.

Here some very useful tips:

once you find the family of gorillas, the porter will stay back, so you need to get all the lenses and equipment you need for the hour of staying with them. Don’t forget anything, otherwise you will have to go back and find the porter, and waste time

remember the VERY STEEP TERRAIN, using a tripod will be very difficult, for me it was impossible; you could try with a monopod, but it will be difficult to use

remember the THICK VEGETATION, expect a low light condition, so pump up your ISO

if you have two cameras (which I hadn’t), have one with a midrange zoom (24-70mm) and one with a telezoom (70-200mm or up)

Using a super telezoom (like mine Sony FE 200-600mm f/5.6-6.3 G OSS) will be very very difficult for the low light, thick vegetation and difficulty in placing a tripod on the steep grounds. This is the ONLY photo I managed to take on the super tele zoom

THE SEYCHELLES ARE A PLAYGROUND FOR PHOTOGRAPHERS

THE SEYCHELLES ARE CONSIDERED TO BE A DREAM HOLIDAY DESTINATION. WHY?
With their unique beaches, the islands are a perfect place to relax. They’re also a playground for photographers. You can take traditional pictures, under water pictures, and pictures from the air.
And between it all, keep taking dips in the sea.

APART FROM THE SEA AND THE BEACHES – WHAT ELSE MAKES THE SEYCHELLES SPECIAL?
They’re home to a variety of animals. For example, Aldabra giant tortoises come from the Seychelles, from the Aldabra Atoll. While diving and snorkelling, you can see sharks, colourful fish and sea turtles.

DO YOU HAVE ANY INSIDER TIPS?
The Sisters’ Islands. You can find beautiful beaches on these small islands and do some wonderful snorkelling – like every where in the Seychelles. But the bonus
is that very few tourists go there and the nature is wilder than anywhere else.

YOU LIKE TO TAKE PHOTOGRAPHS USING A DRONE. THIS SURELY WON’T MAKE YOU VERY POPULAR.
I’m always discreet and ask for permission whenever and wherever necessary. I let my drone fly as far away as possible from the tourists and use the time around sun rise because no one’s on the road yet.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR PERSONAL STYLE?
It defines itself through vivid colours and different perspectives. With my pictures I want to encourage people to travel.
Because I’m convinced that travel brings people together.

In the surrounding area of Soussuvlei there are scenic lodges that will put you in front of endless desert. This one for example is the Desert Homestead Lodge, seen from the drone perspective

This area has also one of the darkest sky in the world, making it the perfect place for astrophotography.

Sandwich Harbour

Namib Desert is connected to the coastal city of Swakopmund with a lonesome road into the wilderness, with the only famous outpost of Solitaire.

Solitaire is a remote settlement in Central Namibia, and is has been a stopover for travelers for more than 60 years.

It is the only place for gas and food in the 5 hours journey that crosses the Namib Desert to the coastal town of Walvis Bay. It features a gas station, a lodge and a bakery, nationwide famous for its apple pie, the best of Namibia.

I didn’t have the pleasure of trying it during our road trip: we were short on time and I got to chose between tasting the cake and taking photos: the hard choices of a travel photographer!

Skeleton Coast

“The Land God Made in Anger”: this is how Bushmen used to call the Skeleton Coast, an unwelcoming stripe of more than 1.500 kilometers in the north of Namibia. Also straightforwardly referred by Portuguese sailors as “The Gates of Hell”.

The scenario is made of arid dunes that end up in the ocean, where violent waves and sudden fogs show up to welcome the few visitors that shows up. Actually, only lions, hyenas and occasionally elephants walk around here, since the whole region is uninhabited.

The only witnesses of human presences are the many shipwrecks on the coast, like the Zeila in this shot, a fishing boat that crashed on the shore only 10 years ago, the last victim of this hostile, end-of-the-worldly land.

Otjitotongwe Cheetah Guestfarm

This place, between Damaraland and Etosha National Park, lets you get a very close look to some domesticated cheetah.

The struggle between large carnivores and farmers is real in all Africa. While in Kenya it often ends up in a tragedy (for the animals), in Namibia often it is converted in a touristic attraction.

Instead of killing of cheetahs that are threatening the hers, Namibian farmers are domesticating them, letting travelers have a close up encounter with them. Better off dead than domesticated for these majestic animals? Or this could raise awareness on their conditions?

Etosha National Park

Victoria Falls are the largest falls in the world, and together with Niagara Falls (between USA and Canada) and Iguazu Falls (between Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay) are the biggest falls in the world.

I have personally see all three of them, and even if my favorite are Iguazu Falls, the Victoria Falls are very dense with wildlife and special activities, making them a true wonder to spend at least a couple of nights.

You can either choose to sleep in Victoria Falls in Zimbawe or in Livingstone in Zambia: you will have to see the falls from both the sides, and crossing is very easy. Also, you will most of the times move around in taxi.

Here some suggestions on the top activitities I have tried:

Devil’s Pool Tour

Devil’s Pool are natural pools literally at the edge of the falls, on the Zambia side. To go there, there is only tour and option that you can take, that will bring you to Livingstone Island (where the pools are), let you sink in and then have breakfast or lunch. Everything is super organized and safe, so you don’t have to worry about anything.

Angel’s Pools

Devil’s Pool are open from end of August, so during August you will sink in the Angel’s Pool, which are almost identical.

It is THE best experience you can have, and nowhere else on the world you can be safely at the edge of such impressive falls.

Victoria Falls Devil Pool

Downside is that you won’t be alone, and taking good pictures is quite challenging: terrain is slippery, and the guides will take some shots for you, since you have to be careful on where to walk. Plus, the moisture in the air is really strong, so using a regular camera (without waterproof casing) is out of the question.

Here’s a quick peak on what to expect on video (not a fancy one, just an informative video

Victoria Falls Helicopter Tour

We did the shortest flight of 12-13 minutes called Helicopter Flight of Angels with Shearwater, located in Victoria Falls. And it has been an amazing experience. Seriously, save on everything, but not on this. Seeing the falls from the sky let you really appreciate how beautiful they are. Plus you can take amazing photographs from the helicopter!

I managed to take the front seat next to the pilot, and you should try to catch the same! Unfortunately I take the blame for choosing the worst hours to do it: midday: I thought that the sun would have lighted the falls from the top, but actually it made all shots a little bit flat. Stick to the golden hour!

The Victoria River Safari

Among the many, many river cruises (remember that in none of them you’ll see the falls), we have picked this one “The Victoria River Safari” with Victoria Falls Guide

This because it was super intimate (we were 5 people out of 12), with a private bartender and small eats for appetizers. Boat is small, quiet, and you can get close to wildlife, like hippos!

We’ve also seen one of the best sunset of Africa (definitely the best of all our travel). Unforgettable.

During the cruise I spotted in the sky a microlight, another activity that you can do. We choose the helicopter over microlight because they didn’t allow to bring any camera on board of it.

Chobe day trip safari from Vic Falls

It is a full day excursion (7am – 6pm) that will bring you to Chobe National Park in Botswana, where you will do a safari on the boat in the morning, and by 4WD in the early afternoon.

It is a unique occasion to see wildlife in and around the river, and we have been very lucky in terms of sightseeing. Definately a great warm up for our African holiday!

Lunch at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge

Victoria Falls Safari Lodge has an amazing bar and restaurant with an open view on the surrounding savana. Plus at around 1pm there is a free tour to know more about vultures, and feed them, and learn more about the importance of these birds to the life chain.

As reported on their website:

The Vulture Culture Experience is a supplementary feeding programme that aids the survival of these remarkable but endangered birds, and allows visitors to enjoy the spectacular sight of hundreds of these birds swooping down to be fed on leftover meat scraps from onsite restaurants.

The activity, which occurs at 1pm daily, begins with a briefing on a deck beneath Victoria Falls Safari Lodge about the ecological importance of vultures and the plight they are facing, before visitors take a short walk down a bush path to a hide to view the vultures feeding. Here there is the opportunity to spot white-headed, hooded, lappet-faced and white-backed vultures, as well as marabou storks.

The project also allows vulture numbers to be monitored, as populations are dwindling due to a variety of human created issues, including electrocution by power lines, loss of available and safe food supply, direct and indirect poisoning and the use of their parts for traditional medicines.

This Vulture Culture Experience, which appeals to all age groups, and is free – although visitors are encouraged to make a donation, which goes to the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust.

The article features some of the best aerial shots I have taken in Seychelles, a true tropical paradise, that definitely lives up the expectations.

The only downside of my visit was the lack of coral reefs, which can be found only in few places of the islands. This is caused by the terrible hurricane that devastated Seychelles few years ago. And also by rising temperatures of the oceans, due to global warming.

I really hope that my travel photography not only inspires people in travelling more, and discover the beauty of our planet, but only to remember that we have to work together to preserve it.

What is Kolmanskop?

Kolmanskop is a ghost town at the edge of Namib Desert, in Namibia. At the beginning of XX century, diamonds were found in area, and a prosperous mining town was build by the Germans, at the time in control of the area.

Buildings were lavish, and built in the german style.

After the world wars, the decline in diamonds lead to the abandonment of the town, and the last families left in 1956, leaving the desert reclaiming back all the houses.

Now it is one of the most popular attraction of Namibia, and a paradise for photographers. Wooden houses are invaded by desert sands, creating impossible landscape.

I would put it among the top 3 highlights of Namibia, and unmissable for any photographer.

How to get there?

Kolmanskop is 1 hour from the nearby town of Luderitz, and literally in front of the Luderitz Airport, which has domestic connections with other town of Namibia.

If you wanna drive straight from Windhoek, the capital of Namibia, consider it would take at least 9 hours, driving straight with no stops within. I personally drove from Windhoek to Keetmanshoop, and it took 5 hours on the gravel B1 road, with no stops at all.

From Keetmanshoop to Kolmanskop is another 3 hours and a half, and near the ghost town the gravel road is invaded by desert sands, forcing you to slow down and being extra careful.

You cannot drive at night in Namibia, and I tell you this from a quite experienced driver whom drove all around the world. The reasons are simple:

Car rental insurances will not cover you for driving after sunset.

There are not street lights at all

After dark, there are a lot of careless truck drivers speeding up in the opposite lane of yours, making the drive VERY challenging.

You can encounters wildlife, sheeps or cows crossing without any sign the road.

it is the the first country in the world for car accidents.

If you are a good driver, you could stretch the driving after sunset maybe for 1 hour or so, but don’t attempt to drive longer than that. I will write more of this!

Where to get tickets?

You can get regular tickets at the gates. If you want a photography permits, that allows you to enter 1 hour before the other guests, you should buy it in Luderitz, in cash, with this agency

How much time does it take to visit Kolmanskop?

We had to visit Kolmanskop in 1 hour, visiting 90% of the houses, but it was in a super hurry, but due to our schedule we had no choice.

I suggest to spend for regular visitor 2 hours there, and for photographers allow 3-4 hours to take the right time to find nice spots in the houses.

Seychelles are a paradise for everyone, but especially for photographers! While you can easily snap the shot on the beach, or take a snorkeling tour for an underwater shot, the view from the sky is for the eye of pilots and their passengers. Until now!

Discover the beauty of Seychelles with this aerial reportage of the main spots, taken by travel photographer Enrico Pescantini and its drone.

La Digue Island

La Digue is the smallest and wildest of the island, and you can see of all of it from the majestic shot! The first beach you see is Anse Severe beach, one of the best to enjoy the sunset, which is the exact time of this photography.

Just behind it, the small town of La Reunion, with the port and the main hotels of the island are located.

Coco Island

Cocos island are one of the best spots on Seychelles for snorkeling, and they can easily be reached with a boat tour from La Digue, and you can spot some of them in this shot. The shallow waters around the island are perfect to spot fishes and sea turtles, without getting too crowded!

Coco Island

If snorkeling is not your cup of tea, in Coco Island you can also chose to reach the small beach and live a Robinson Crusoe experience in a deserted tiny island! Not much to see around the island, besides probably the best pristine waters in the world!

Big Sister Island

We live in a blue planet, and this aerial composition of Big Sister Island (or La Grande Soeur) is a beautiful example of it! This private island hosts what I personally believe as one of the best beaches of the world, with bright white sand and vivi light blue water. A truly paradise, hidden by jungles and rocks that resembles a set from the movie Jurassic World

[prisna-google-website-translator] Seychelles are a true paradise for nature and beach lover, and I have already presented you its beauty from an aerial perspective in my previous reportage.

Let’s take a closer look to the best beaches of Seychelles!

Let’s start with Anse Severe, a beautiful beach in the south of La Digue. It is a very big and large beach, and you can find your own piece of sand even in the crowdest day. Not the best for snorkeling, but amazing for some beach and water shots.

Anse Severe

You can take the famous shots of a beautiful girl on the rocks, but there could be a line for doing that

Anse Severe

Or you can take the shooting underwater with a GoPro Dome:

Anse Severe

Moving on La Digue, n the north of the island, about 15 minutes by bike and 23 by walking from the main town, there is the super famous ANSE SOURCE D’ARGENT, said to be the most photographed beach in the world.

Be here absolutely on low tide, otherwise it would be a very bad experience. Again, not good for snorkeling, but otherwise you’ll get breathtaking shots of the beach:

So where the snorkeling action is? In my opinion, the best snorkeling experience of the Seychelles is a day boat trip to Sisters Islands and Coco Island, that could be easily organized from La Digue Town.

In the main island, Big Sister, you will find what is probably one of the best beaches in the world:

Grande Soeur Island

All around the island, the opportunity for snorkeling is simply amazing, with the gems of Coco Island and Little Sister Island, Below some snorkeling shots I’ve taken during this trip:
